EU
AMT occupies a unique position in the Japanese legal market: we can provide genuine EU law advice and support a broad range of cross-border matters in Europe for Japanese and Asian companies. For nearly two decades, the firm has had a UK-qualified partner with long experience advising on EU and EU competition law from Brussels and London, including a year at the European Commission’s DG COMP. In addition, many of our Japan-qualified lawyers have studied in Europe and worked at leading law firms – often within their EU law departments – in Brussels, London, Paris, Frankfurt and Madrid. Over many decades, we have also built close working relationship with European firms and regularly hosts their lawyers to complement our EU practice. The need for EU law continues to grow significantly with the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement and increasing trade between two of the world's largest economies. As corporations and investors face a tightening global regulatory environment for cross-border operations and investments, demand is rising for sophisticated advice from practitioners versed in both European and Japanese law. Reflecting that demand, after opening our London office in September 2022, we launched our Brussels office in April 2024 and our Paris office in March 2026. Working seamlessly with our Tokyo and European offices, we now advise on M&A, compliance and regulation including competition and tech regulation, IP, and contentious matters that involve EU law and, more broadly, business between Europe and Japan.
