Our firm continues to assist refugee application processes as part of our pro bono activities in association with Japan Association for Refugees (JAR). In November 2018, three applicants whom we assisted in seeking refugee status have been recognized as refugees by the Ministry of Justice.

In 2017, only 43 applicants were granted refugee or residence status in Japan through the refugee application processes. The recognition rate is merely 0.2% of the overall refugee applications in 2017 (number of recognition / number of applications less withdrawn applications).
